1st - 2nd December 2016: Scientific conference “Taking Stock – 20 Years of GM Crops – 40 Years of ‘Genetic Engineering'” in Mexico City

  • The conference preceeds the 8th Meeting of the Parties (MOP8) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, due to take place in Cancun, Mexico, from December 4-17, 2016. The conference in Mexico City is organised by:
  • - Unión de Científicos Comprometidos con la Sociedad (UCCS)
  • - Unión de Científicos Comprometidos con la Sociedad y la Naturaleza de América Latina (UCCSNAL)
  • - Third World Network (TWN)
  • European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSSER)
  • It has become a tradition, carried on by TWN and ENSSER, to hold a scientific conference before each of the biennial Cartagena Protocol Meetings in order to inform delegates to these meetings of the latest scientific developments. The 'pre-MOP' conference can, however, also be attended without visiting MOP8; it is intended to inform everyone concerned with GM crop developments.

5th December 2016 (12.00 – 15.30 h)
Workshop of the European GMOfree Regions Network:
GMO-free Labelling of Food – Searching for a common European approach
At Representation of North Rhine-Westphalia in Brussels

  • While there is virtually no cultivation of genetically modified crops in most European states, GMOs are still widely used in animal feed and in food processing. However, many consumers want their food to be produced entirely free from genetic modification. In this situation, GMO-free labelling has proven an effective instrument to promote entirely GM-free food chains, thus ensuring that consumers interests are met, and creating business opportunities for GM free producers.
  • At the conference, different national labelling systems will be presented and the need for a common European approach will be discussed.
