Chile: Farmer won lawsuit against Monsanto

José Pizarro Montoya, 38, a landless farmer and former producer of GMO between 2009-2010 season in Melipilla (RM), is the first Chilean and perhaps the only Latin American to won a lawsuit against Monsanto. He tried to reveal their case in transgenic seminar organized in Stone House on January 22 by Agriculture Minister Luis Mayol. GM contamination case in Australia: An organic farmer seeks compensation from a GM farmer

Steve Marsh is a farmer who lost his organic certification when genetically modified (GM) canola blew onto his farm from a neighbouring property in 2010. Steve lost most of his income and has struggled for the past three years trying to make ends meet while working to decontaminate his land and get his organic certification back. In this case the contamination comes from canola patented by Monsanto but the biotech company avoids legal implications by including a no liability clause with each sale of their GM-seeds. If Steve wins it will set a precedent – making GM farmers in Australia responsible for any cases of GM contamination. The judgement will also guide the application of common law to GM contamination events and will be of interest to lawmakers worldwide.

This landmark case is set to begin on the 10th of February in the Western Australian Supreme Court and as we get closer to the date the urgency for support is stronger than ever. We are seeking support from all around the world as this issue affects everyone of us and our choice of what we eat. Steve’s opponent is well supported and well funded by a pro-GM organisation and we need to make sure Steve has the best case possible to win this for all of us.

EP voted in favour of a resolution to reject to authorise the GM maize 1507 cultivation

New GM maize authorisation must be rejected according to EP
The European Parliament today voted in favour of a resolution initiated by the Greens calling on EU governments to reject a proposal by the European Commission to authorise the cultivation of a variety of GM maize in the EU for the first time in 15 years. The Greens welcomed the outcome, with health and food safety spokesman Bart Staes stating:
"The Parliament has today made its position very clear: there should be no new authorisation of GM maize, as proposed by the Commission. This vote is a clear rebuke to the European Commission and gives a clear democratic mandate to EU governments to reject the proposed authorisation of this GM maize variety. The gung-ho approach by the Commission to this controversial and unpopular technology is simply not acceptable and EU governments in Council must now deliver a clear response and reject this authorisation.
