Is demand for non-GM soy boosting ‘green agriculture’ in the Amazon?
Globalization can be a double-edged sword. While it has led to deforestation in the Amazon for production of soybeans, research indicates that demand by European and Japanese consumers for non-genetically modified (GM) soy could also boost ecological approaches in the region.
Consumers in Europe and Japan show a strong preference for foods that don’t contain GM ingredients and are prepared to pay extra. Foods derived directly from GM crops must be labelled in these nations, although meat and dairy products from animals fed GM corn and soybeans are exempt.
